Premium vs. Regular Gas: Is There a Difference?

Gas pumps in a row

The simple answer to this question is “yes.” When it comes to premium vs. regular gas, there is a difference. Drivers pulling up to the gas pump have become used to seeing a range of gas offerings, regular (87), midgrade (88-90), and premium (91-94). These offerings are known as Octane Ratings. Drivers have developed a lot of myths around when and why to use a specific type of gas. We at Capitol Acura will bust those myths to make you a more informed San Jose driver.

Understanding Octane Ratings

The most basic definition of Octane Rating is the fuel’s ability to resist knocking or pinging during combustion. As a reminder, the Octane Rating is the gas you select at the pump. Higher octane gas can withstand higher levels of pressure before combustion. San Jose drivers would not want the gas in the engine combusting spontaneously instead of from the spark plug when mixing with air. So, what does this all mean? When thinking about premium vs. regular gas, the biggest takeaway is that as the octane goes up, so does fuel efficiency and performance.

Does it mean that you have to use a higher octane gas? No, it means that when deciding which gas to fuel up with, regular gas or premium, the best one is the one your vehicle manufacturer recommends.

What Happens If I Opt Not to Use the Recommended Octane?

The manufacturer usually recommends what type of gas is needed. However, using the wrong gas could cause engine damage and voided warranties. Let your owner’s manual decide between premium vs. regular gas. It’s a lot safer.

Busting Premium vs. Regular Gas Myths

As informed drivers, we no longer need myths or wise old tales to decide which gas to use. As informed drivers, we now understand the following:

  • The best gas is the one recommended in your owner’s manual. If your car didn’t come with an owner’s manual, go to the manufacturer’s website and look for information.
  • Using a higher octane than required won’t improve your fuel efficiency or prolong the life of your engine. To make a recommendation between regular or premium gas car manufacturers have already tested the engine, and the recommended octane represents the best performance and fuel efficiency.
